Neuropathy and Peripheral Neuropathy

Neuropathy refers to any form of damage to the nervous system. Conditions like diabetes can have a widespread impact—affecting nerves in the brain, eyes, heart, and digestive system, as well as the small nerves in the feet, legs, and hands.

Peripheral Neuropathy (PN) is a condition that impacts the peripheral nerves. For many people, it can develop as a lesser-known and often misunderstood side effect of taking statin medications prescribed for cholesterol management.

Peripheral Nerve Cells

The peripheral nervous system is made up of nerves that extend from the spinal cord to different areas of the body. Each peripheral nerve cell has three key parts: the cell body, axons, and dendrites (the nerve-to-muscle junction). Axons serve as the communication pathways, carrying signals from one nerve cell to another or from a nerve cell to a muscle.

Peripheral Neuropathy Symptoms

Peripheral Neuropathy (PN) can cause a wide range of symptoms, including loss of reflexes, muscle strength, and sensation—such as numbness. Early on, many patients don’t notice these changes because the brain works to compensate for the deficits. Over time, however, the damage becomes more apparent, leading to hallmark signs of neuropathy like tingling, burning, stabbing, or shooting pain. Each person experiences and describes their pain differently, which can make diagnosis challenging for doctors unfamiliar with the condition.

As a result, many patients find themselves trapped in a frustrating cycle—visiting doctor after doctor, receiving increasingly stronger medications, and eventually becoming either heavily medicated or left to endure unrelenting pain.

Loss of sensation in the feet, toes, and ankles can also impair balance and spatial awareness, significantly increasing the risk of falls. At our facility, we use advanced diagnostic tools to detect and address the root cause of this often “silent” nerve damage before it progresses further.

For some, PN may begin with mild tingling and gradually escalate into sharp pains and burning shocks. For others, mobility can become so limited that walking is no longer possible. These symptoms are often most severe at night, disrupting sleep and worsening over time.

Conventional medicine typically focuses on masking symptoms rather than repairing the damaged nerves. Unfortunately, many patients cannot tolerate the side effects of heavy medications—but feel they have no alternative to cope with the constant, debilitating pain.
